History and Ownership

In 1995, the Steamboat Lake Fishing Company moved into downtown Steamboat at the Old Town Square building. With new partner, Hans Berrand, the shop now carried Scott Rods and Ross Reels, along with fine products from Simms and Scientific Anglers. Hans also expanded the guide business with quality fishing on leased properties along the Yampa River in Milner. The shop also stayed open year-round offering dedicated anglers fly-tying materials and winter fishing information and tips.

1997 saw the shop evolve again as Duncan Draper purchased the business, dropped the "Lake" from the name, and moved to a larger location in the Old Town Square complex. Working to improve customer service and angling opportunities, Duncan started the free weekly casting clinics, and worked closely with the Yampa Valley Flyfishers on fishing clinics and access for members. The guide business was expanded and many of the guides working with the Steamboat Flyfisher got their start over the next few years.

In 2001, the shop changed owners as Jeff and Lisa Ruff purchased the business. With an emphasis on service, new product lines, and expanding markets, the shop's business increased. New products from Sage, Simms, Lamson, and Winston were added and fly selections expanded. Paul Russell took the guide service to a new level adding more properties and guides. Also, tropical destination trips started and anglers enjoyed saltwater fishing, and a great selection of saltwater gear right here in the Yampa Valley.

Steve Henderson and Tim Kirkpatrick have owned Steamboat Flyfisher since April 2005. We have continued to provide the same service as previous ownerships and have chosen to grow the shop to further provide a first-class experience for all customers. Steve and Tim have both been rooted in the Yampa Valley for over a decade and have established themselves as fishermen as well as engaged members of the Steamboat Springs community. We look forward to sharing our passion of Steamboat Springs with you.
